Subnautica 2 Unveils Full Cross-Platform Co-op – Up to Four Players Can Now Explore the Depths Together

By ✦ min read

Breaking: Subnautica 2 will support up to four-player co-op with full cross-play and cross-progression across PC and Xbox, developer Unknown Worlds Entertainment confirmed today. The feature marks a major shift for the franchise, which previously forced players to survive Planet 4546B alone.

“We heard the community loud and clear – exploring an alien ocean is better with friends,” said a studio spokesperson in an exclusive statement. “Co-op isn’t just an add-on; it’s at the core of Subnautica 2’s design.”

How Co-Op Works in Subnautica 2

Players can form parties of up to four, either through a public matchmaking system or by inviting friends via platform-specific menus. The game supports seamless drop-in/drop-out sessions, so no progress is lost when a player joins or leaves.

Cross-play means a player on Xbox can dive alongside friends on PC without any restriction. Cross-progression syncs save data between platforms, provided the player owns both versions – a feature aimed at dedicated fans who play on multiple devices.

Background

Subnautica (2018) and Subnautica: Below Zero (2021) were strictly single-player experiences. Despite critical acclaim, a vocal portion of the player base called for multiplayer, especially after modders created unofficial co-op tools.

Unknown Worlds acknowledged the demand in a 2023 developer blog, promising to “rethink how we approach shared survival.” The team rebuilt the game’s netcode from scratch to support real-time synchronization of base-building, resource gathering, and creature encounters.

What This Means

The addition of co-op fundamentally changes the survival dynamic. Players can now assign roles – one gathers materials while another constructs a deep-sea habitat or scouts for threats like the Leviathan-class predators.

Industry analysts note that cross-play in particular could broaden the player base. “Subnautica has always thrived on its atmospheric isolation,” said Dr. Alena Norris, a gaming trends researcher. “Co-op might erode some tension, but it adds a layer of social strategy that could attract a new audience.”

Limitations and Future Updates

Co-op is limited to four players – larger servers are not planned for launch. The studio has also ruled out split-screen, citing performance constraints on current console hardware. However, Unknown Worlds confirmed that a dedicated server tool for custom rooms is under development.

Pre-orders for Subnautica 2 begin next month. A public beta for the co-op mode will launch in early 2025, giving players a chance to test the feature before the full release.
